Fury stares at you, incredulous half-laugh like he can’t believe you just said that to his face (but of course he can, because he knows you by now, and you sure hope he’s in a decent mood, because if not, you’ve just made a hell of a mistake).
And then he just breathes the sigh of the long-suffering and puts you on drill duty with the new junior agents for a week, which you figure is probably fair retaliation, though you complain mightily nonetheless.
As you leave, you’re pretty damned sure you hear him say, “I’m proud of you, Hawkeye,” but by the time you turn around, he’s got his back to you and is paying no attention whatsoever.
