You’ve made a lot of mistakes in your brief S.H.I.E.L.D. career, but putting someone else’s life on the line in exchange for your own has never been one of them, and it never will be. You’re not calling anyone for help; you’ll go on fighting until there’s no more you can do.
Life doesn’t work that way, though, never behaves like you might expect, and although you don’t say anything at all over the comms, there’s a booming announcement, “I am come to your assistance, friends!” and suddenly Thor’s landing beside you, Mjölnir at the ready. You think for a second that he’s going to fight, but what he actually does is grab you in one big hand, scoop Sitwell up in the same arm (you grab onto his suit jacket in case Thor’s grip isn’t enough, and he latches onto you with both hands) and fly you both straight up to the chopper.
It doesn’t click right away for you, but eventually it sinks in. You’re not dead. You’re not dead and Sitwell isn’t dead and Natasha is safe and for once, just for once, nothing is completely fucked up.
You could get used to that.
