Coulson’s always telling you not to put the mission at risk because of some stupid pride-and-ego thing. (well, he’s always telling Tony, but you reckon it applies to all of you.) So you call for help, because it’s obvious you need it.
Steve radios back that he’s on his way, and you keep fighting; someone knocks your legs out from under you and you go down, Sitwell too far away to drag you upright again, so you lash out from the ground (your legs won’t work properly, fuck, that’s probably going to mean rehab or something). Steve shows up, breathless, but as soon as his eyes land on you his whole face closes up and you think, shit, what aren’t you seeing, what aren’t you -
That’s when you see the next wave of Hydra agents behind Steve, and you try to shout, but it comes out hoarse and not quite words and there’s darkness prickling at the edge of your vision. You see Steve go down, try to spot Sitwell in the battle and can’t, and you think this is probably the end of the assignment for all three of you.
At least, you tell yourself while you can still think, technically, you achieved your mission objectives. That will help with the paperwork.
